Learning Objectives: By the end of this training, participants will:

1. Understand burnout, its symptoms, and how it affects mental health counselors.

2. Explore the body's alarm system (stress response) and how trauma responses manifest.

3. Review ethical responsibility to monitor effectiveness and learn strategies to assess for potential impairment/burnout.

4. Learn skills to manage symptoms, reduce stress, regulate trauma responses, and build resilience to maintain professional efficacy and prevent harm to clients.

5. Discuss ethical considerations and challenges related to burnout and trauma in counseling.

Description: If you’re feeling overwhelmed, exhausted, or wondering “is working in mental health the career for me” then this may be the CEU you’ve been waiting for! Facilitators will collaborate with participants to identify and recognize burnout, learn practical skills to cope, and walk away with valuable tools that increase self compassion and promote self-care. Facilitators will teach participants about the physiological impacts burnout has on mental health professionals and demonstrate ways to regulate and alleviate their internal stress responses. This valuable information is intended to assist clinicians in showing up more genuinely and authentically in their clinical practices. Facilitators will support participants in differentiating between and deciding if they are experiencing an activation response, a symptom of burnout, and/or some type of impairment and provide clinicians with tools to prioritize their professional responsibility to maximize counselor efficacy and minimize client harm. Finally, participants will learn about and discuss ethical challenges, considerations, and interventions related to burnout, our individual stress responses, and counselor impairment.

Disclaimer: Raising Consciousness Consulting, LLC incorporates both facilitator led lecture and participant processing into their trainings. Participants will have the opportunity to both actively listen and engage with concepts and content throughout the session (through ongoing opportunities for large and small group processing). Due to the highly experiential nature of the training, it is critical that all participants are fully present for the entire session and participate in processing.

To optimize your comfort during the training:

- Be fully present for the entire training

- Avoid scheduling meetings or other commitments during breaks

- Dress comfortably

- Bring water, snacks, and a pillow if you prefer sitting on the floor

- Consider any personal needs that might affect your ability to stay engaged

This session will be highly experiential, and you may experience activation during the process. We encourage you to engage in meaningful self-care throughout the training (and reach out to any of the facilitators for support). Additionally, please remember that opportunities for processing are for practice purposes and while healing may occur, we encourage you to focus on issues that are well within your system's window of tolerance.
